Two Generations of Kitchens, One Kind of Cold

Ken Caryl's housing stock tells two stories. Along the older streets below the hills, original builds still run the upright and drawer freezers they were fitted with decades ago, dependable but showing their age in worn seals and tired defrost systems. A short drive away, gut remodels around Ken-Caryl Ranch have dropped in the latest column freezers and integrated drawers, with electronics that fail in entirely different ways.

We repair both. On an older freezer the fix is often mechanical, a defrost timer that will not advance, a fan motor gone noisy, a door seal that no longer grips. On a newer luxury unit a warm compartment is just as likely to be a temperature sensor feeding bad data or a control fault the display cannot explain. Knowing which era you are dealing with shapes how we diagnose it.

What both share is the same job: holding a hard, even freeze. When a garage or basement freezer stores the overflow for a big gathering, a slow temperature drift can quietly ruin a week of prep before anyone notices.

What to Check Before We Arrive

A few quick observations help us diagnose faster and often arrive with the right part.

  • Read the Actual TemperatureSet a thermometer inside for an hour. A freezer that holds near 0 F but has warm spots points to airflow, not the compressor.
  • Inspect the Door SealClose the drawer on a slip of paper; if it slides out easily, a worn gasket may be letting warm air in and frost build up.
  • Look at the Frost PatternEven, heavy frost suggests a defrost fault; frost only near the door usually means a seal problem.
  • Listen for Short-CyclingA compressor that clicks on and off every few minutes often signals a failing start relay or overheating. Note the rhythm for us.

Quick Answers

Why is my freezer building up frost in Ken Caryl?
Heavy, even frost usually means the automatic defrost system, the timer, heater or sensor, has failed, while frost only near the door points to a worn seal letting humid air in. Both are common and repairable. Call (303) 729-0972 for an $89 diagnostic.
My freezer isn't cold enough. Is it the compressor?
Not always. Warm spots often trace to a fan motor, a blocked evaporator coil or a temperature sensor sending bad readings, all cheaper than a compressor. We diagnose the exact cause on site before quoting anything.
How much does freezer repair start at?
Freezer repairs start around $149 depending on the part, on top of the flat $89 diagnostic fee. The final price is confirmed only after inspection, and you approve it before we begin. Book anytime online or by phone.

A Freezer That Drifts Costs More Than the Repair

A unit sitting at 15 F instead of 0 F often looks fine and keeps running, but it is slowly degrading everything inside, and freezer burn on a chest full of gathering prep adds up fast. If your ice cream is soft or the meat looks dry at the edges, have the temperature checked before the loss grows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you repair chest and drawer freezers, not just uprights?

Yes. Upright, drawer and chest freezers are all within our scope, along with the freezer compartments of built-in refrigerators.

Is a freezer with a warm compartment safe to keep using?

It can raise your food-safety risk and waste energy. We would recommend a quick diagnostic rather than waiting, since a small sensor or fan issue can worsen into a full failure.

How long does a freezer repair take?

Many common repairs, seals, relays and fan motors, are completed in a single visit because we stock those parts. A control board or sealed-system issue may need a scheduled return.

Can a worn door seal really cause frost problems?

Absolutely. A gasket that no longer grips lets humid room air seep in, which freezes into frost and forces the compressor to work harder. Replacing the seal usually resolves both.

Do you charge more for older freezers?

No. The $89 diagnostic and the same honest, part-based estimating apply whether your freezer is thirty years old or brand new.

Called just before six in the morning fully expecting to leave a voicemail, and a real person picked up. Our garage freezer had quit overnight in the June heat with half a side of beef sitting in it — the condenser fan had seized solid, and he already had the replacement with him, so it was done in one visit. Not a thing thawed, and he was decent enough not to comment on the state of the garage.

I had already started pricing new dishwashers. Every glass was coming out of the Miele with a chalky grey film on it and nothing I ran through the machine made any difference. The real culprit was our hard Douglas County water: scale baked hard onto the heating element, and a spray-arm bearing worn enough to wobble. He descaled it, fitted the new bearing, and corrected a water softener setting that had apparently been wrong since the house was built — clear glassware again, for a small fraction of a replacement.

Sixty-two degrees is not where you want a cabinet of reds sitting, and by then the display had gone dark as well. A power blip earlier that month had cooked the control board; he confirmed that on the first visit, got the correct board, and fitted it a couple of days later. What I appreciated more was that he then set a target temperature our basement can genuinely hold — at 6,200 feet it swings far more than people expect — rather than leaving it on a number that would have the compressor fighting all year.

The griddle on our Wolf had gone from useful to useless, scorching eggs on one pass and barely setting them on the next. He put a meter on it, found the griddle plate thermostat reading well outside its range, and swapped it. Then he checked the oven calibration while he was in there without my asking, which up here matters more than most people realise. The invoice matched the number he gave me before he started, to the dollar.

Every couple of weeks we were chipping a sheet of ice off the freezer floor and mopping up after it. The drain-line heater had failed, so defrost water was refreezing before it ever reached the drain — a genuine part went in and the ice has not come back once since. He also pulled the grille and showed me how much dust a Westridge summer packs into the condenser, which I now vacuum on a schedule.

The humidity control in our undercounter wine drawer stopped regulating and the corks were starting to dry out. I have to be honest about the scheduling: we were given an arrival window twice and both times they turned up well outside it without a phone call, so an afternoon went to waste. The technician himself was excellent — he explained what the humidity module actually does, fitted the replacement, and it has held steady ever since. Good work, but the dispatching needs tightening up.
